When Big B was 2 we enrolled in swimming lessons at the Tonawanda Aquatics and Fitness Center. Classes meet in 6-7 week sessions and last 30 minutes. Kids as young as 6 months can participate! The "lessons" take place in the big pool which is heated...or so they say! The teachers are certified life guards and in the Level A class balls, noodles, games and songs are used to teach the kids how to get their legs kicking and their arms moving. Big B was definitely scared of the whole thing the first couple of weeks but the instructors are very hands on and patient with the kids. Now, I'm not saying your 2 year old is going to be able to swim independently after taking this class but a foundation is laid to build upon as they get older.
When I did this with Big B we would arrive 15-20 minutes early, dump our stuff in the locker room and play in the heated kids pool until class started. (A great time to meet other moms and dads while letting the kids play together). After class we would play in the kids pool for several more minutes before heading home.
The locker rooms and showers are neat and clean, the pool area has been recently updated (in 2008) and in general the whole facility seems very nice. With a cost of $40 for 6-7 weeks, I would say it is definitely worth trying out! If you are a member of the Tonawanda Aquatics and Fitness Center the cost is significantly less.
If you go here you can see the current schedule for swimming lessons as well as age requirements, swimming levels, class times and fees. It looks as though the new session just began this week so if you don't mind missing the first week it's not too late to enroll.
Have your kids had swimming lessons at the Tonawanda Aquatic and Fitness Center before? Leave a comment and let me know how they liked it!
